Dr. Alfonso is a board-certified endocrinologist with over 20 years’ experience. He received his medical degree from Michigan State University College of Osteopathic Medicine (MSU-COM) in 2001. He completed an Internal Medicine internship and residency at Brooked Army Medical Center (BAMC) in San Antonio, TX in 2004, followed by completion of an endocrinology fellowship at Walter Reed Army Medical Center (WRAMC) in Washington, DC in 2006. Dr. Alfonso was initially board-certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM) in Internal Medicine in 2004, and in Endocrinology, Diabetes, and Metabolism in 2006. Dr. Alfonso participates in ABIM’s Maintenance of Certification (MOC) program.
Dr. Alfonso is a US Veteran. In 1997 he joined the US Army after being awarded a scholarship from the Health Professions Scholarship Program (HPSP) to attend medical school. Upon completion of medical school in 2001, Dr. Alfonso was promoted to the rank of Captain. In November 2006, Dr. Alfonso was deployed to Iraq where he spent 13 months in Mosul and surrounding areas. In 2007, Dr. Alfonso was promoted to the rank of Major. He honorably separated from the Army in 2010.
Dr. Alfonso is bilingual and fluent in English and Spanish. He is originally from Havana, Cuba and left Cuba at age 10. After living in Caracas, Venezuela for 6 years, Dr. Alfonso moved to Miami, FL where he completed his high school and undergraduate education.
Dr. Alfonso has received multiple awards and accolades throughout the years. He graduated Cum Laude from Florida International University in 1997 and was selected to be a member of the Golden Key National Honor Society. He has several publications in peer-reviewed journals and was awarded the John L. Carpenter Outstanding Research Award and SAUSHEC Commander’s Outstanding Research Award in 2004. He was a semifinalist of the Bailey K. Ashford Research Award in 2006. Dr. Alfonso was recognized as Fellow of the American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists (F.A.C.E.) in 2010. He was featured in Northern Virginia Magazine as one of Northern Virginia’s Top Doctors in 2012, and 2013. Dr. Alfonso was board-certified by the Board of Obesity Medicine in 2023.
Dr. Alfonso also received recognition throughout his military career. He was recipient of the Army Commendation Medal (ARCOM) in 2004, and 2006; and the Army Achievement Medal (AAM) in 2006. He was also recipient of the National Defense Service Medal (NDSM) and Global War on Terrorism Service Medal (GWOTSM), 5-82 FA Battalion Coin, and Iraq Campaign Medal with Campaign Star in 2007.
Dr. Alfonso is a member of several professional societies, including the Endocrine Society, American Association of Clinical Endocrinology (AACE), the Midwest Endocrinology Society (MWES), and the Obesity Medicine Association (OMA).
In his free time, Dr. Alfonso enjoys outdoor activities include hiking, biking, and kayaking. He also enjoy traveling, both within the US and abroad.
