Type 1 diabetes
Type 1 diabetes is associated with a deficiency or lack of insulin. The pancreatic islet cells stop producing insulin in the quantities needed to maintain a normal blood glucose level. Without sufficient insulin, the blood glucose level rises, causing some of the common signs and symptoms of elevated blood sugar (hyperglycemia).
One of the first signs of hyperglycemia is unexpected and unexplained weight loss and excessive urination that occurs over several days and is associated with the onset of their diabetes.
Type 1 diabetes must be treated with insulin. This involves injecting insulin under the skin for it to be absorbed into the bloodstream where it can then access the cells of the body that require it. We can help you do this regularly through the use of insulin pumps, pens, patches, and even inhaled insulin in some cases.
Type 2 diabetes
Type 2 diabetes (T2D) is much more common than Type 1 diabetes with about 90 to 95 percent of people with diabetes having T2D. People with Type 2 diabetes develop a process called insulin resistance, which causes their bodies not to properly use the insulin the produce.

Gestational diabetes
Many women may develop diabetes during pregnancy due to abnormal blood glucose levels during this time. Screenings vary person to person based on an individual’s needs, but generally will include:
- Initial glucose challenge test.
- Follow-up glucose tolerance testing. If your blood sugar is higher than normal, you’ll need another glucose tolerance test to determine if you have the condition.
Treatment for gestational diabetes includes lifestyle changes, blood sugar monitoring, and medication, if necessary. Our team is committed to developing a comprehensive plan to ensure the most effective care possible.
