Woodbury Endocrinology works with patients throughout the state of Minnesota, giving them the care they need to address their unique health concerns. One of the most common issues that men face as they age is low testosterone levels, which can cause mood changes, muscle loss, and so many other negative effects. Learn more about this problem and how we can help you address it below.

Testosterone treatments

We offer testosterone treatment for men diagnosed with hypogonadism.

One of the most common options is testosterone gel. They are applied topically (to the skin) daily and many people find them convenient. Sometimes absorption of testosterone gels through the skin can be an issue, resulting in suboptimal clinical response. Concern about cross-contamination, personal preference, cost/insurance coverage may also be an issue. For people who have these concerns, intramuscular testosterone injections (e.g. testosterone cypionate or enanthate) can be a a good alternative.

This treatment is usually given either intramuscularly or subcutaneously once a week and it is generally less expensive than other forms of testosterone replacement. Patients may self-administer the injection at home or a family member/caregiver can do it for them. Some people may find intramuscular injections painful or may not like the idea of getting an injection regularly. Intramuscular testosterone is also more likely to result in polycythemia (high red blood cell count) than testosterone gels.

Additional Options in the Treatment of Low-T

There is a relatively new method of delivering testosterone in the form of an auto-injector pen device (Xyosted) that administers testosterone subcutaneously (rather than intramuscularly), and it is therefore less invasive. Every pen is single use and with the auto injector patients never even see the needle! Cost can be of concern, but the manufacturer may offer a co-pay assistance program for patients with commercial insurance that can help defray the cost of this medication.

There are also testosterone pellets and depo-testosterone (testosterone cypionate) intramuscular injection that must be administered in the office by a healthcare professional. Oral and intranasal testosterone preparations are also available, however, they do need to be taken several times a day.
